ADVICE from “From Foal to Full Grown” by Janet Lorch  ISBN 0-7153-0722-3

Ultrasound pregancy
Ultrasound as early as 14 days or as late as 45 days.
Recommended times, day 18 to 21 then 25 to 35 days.

If the mare stays at the stud then she will be presented to stud at day 16 after last covering then every 2nd day thereafter to establish if she is going to return to season.
If she does not then there is every likelihood that she is in foal.
Therefore scanning at 21 days is recommended in order to save unnecessary expense.
Subsequent scanning at 25-35 days is also recommend to establish that the mare is still in foal, & by this time a heartbeat can
usually be detected on the screen.
After day 45 the scanner isn’t so accurate, then manual palpitation can be done on day 42 accurately.

Blood test for pregnancy
Between 40 & 60 days for PMSGBetween 45 & 100 days for eCG

We suggest:  Ultra sounding the  mare at day 18 this provides two days time to catch her next in-heat cycle if she isn’t in foal when
Artificial Inseminating and shipped semen is being used for breeding.

Then you can have semen collected (day 18) and shipped in time to AI breed on day 20 & 21.

ADVICE from “From Foal to Full Grown” by Janet Lorch  ISBN 0-7153-0722-3

Foaling Heat
First season after foaling; it occurs normally 7-10 days after foal is born and lasts only 2 to 3 days - unless a stallion is at hand it
often isn’t noticeable.  Thereafter the mare’s system will return to its usual season every 21 days.

Mare HeatEach cycle should last 21 days.

Day 0-6;  In season   estrustail up, winking, relaxed cervix.
Day 5,    In season Ovulationtail up, winking, splayed hind legs, urination, open cervix
Day 7*   Out of season    diestrusears back, kicking, closed cervix
Day 20    start of next season   New estrusRenewed interest in stallion

* If the period of estrus lasts longer than 8 days this indicates that there may be something wrong.

Classic signs of mare in season (Heat)
May show one or several:
1. Lifting of tail combined with a:
2. Swelling of vulva lips
3. Mucus will escape from the vulva
4. Winking (an action that pushes out the clitoris)
5. Crouching down as she straddles her legs and urinates.

There should be no harm in gentle riding of mare during pregnancy providing she was ridden regularly prior to pregancy.   Keep
her calm, no jumping, no short bursts of galloping, no strenuous runs, no sudden hard stops/slides, or suddenly working
without physically working up to that condition.

Put mare in the foaling area one month before foaling to acclimate her, and to allow her to build up anti bodies to protect her and
foal from germs in the new area.

Foaling date:
Horse: One month back from breeding day, plus 5 days.
Mule:   One month back from breeding day, plus 5 days to one full year.

Foaling signs:
Udder - observe carefully from 6 wks before birth.
Vulva - look for slackening of vulva lips.
Body & hindquarters -watch for change of shape, & extra heaviness.
Legs - may fill, & mare will become much slower in her movement.

Imminent signs:
1. Udders should be hard & full.
2.  Waxing may occur.
3.  Mare may run milk.
4.  Unusual restlessness in the field or table.
5.  Muscles & ligaments under the tail very relaxed, vulva long & easy to open when parted by the observer.

Physical papation:    14-16 days no heat:  Two finger size cervix, firm muscles.
of            18 days softening, of muscles, and three fingers fit cervix.  Order semen.
mare         19 days  Collection & ship semen.
Day 20 & 21 Soft muscles, and fits 4 fingers easily.  Insemenate mare.

We can bring the stallion to you for Approximatelyile, Plus Stud fee & booking.
Need one or two months ahead, to find heat yourself.  Possibly more.

Give stallion owner and stallion station a minium of a months warning. Then a couple days warning when mare service starts to change. Day 17 & 18.
This process involves physical vaginal palpation of your mare by yourself or vet; to be sure she is in heat.

On day 18 order semen.  Day 19 collect most days (5AM) and ship.

Day 20 & 21  insemination of your mare by vet/yourself when your semen arrives.

If you can't be gentle & clean; DO NOT DO.     No scratches allowed period!

Minimum of two people are required, secure, clean insemination area.   We have an outdoor area to wash with pails. Use a Hay ring with a plank in between the loops (mare may kick) (use care not to put your arm in a spot where is will be broken), with a tie posts and two coral panels to keep mare still.  Small square bales with white sheets to
lay equipment on.  Don't take semen out of container until the last minute (Don't keep in the sun heat or light either.) 100% success rate to date for us.

Plan ahead:  Signed contracts are necessary.  All breeding fees are to be paid prior to services being rendered. Allow time for mailing of paperwork.

We order shipper to pickup semen a day before we collect it.  A No show means you still have a bill to pay.

No collection on Fridays, Sat, or Sunday.

Most days collection is at 5AM-5:30 AM.  Must be done by 7:00AM.  Unless I can get a day off from work. (Rare right now. And an occassional Thursday.)

If you book after May 1, of any year, there will be a $10.00 a mile fee to have stallion hauled home for collection or breeding plus $6.00 a mile to have him returned to range.  This will also be part of you bill should you breed to stallions, if you do not book before May 1, of any year.
